One moonlit night Shuichiro saved an angel stuck in a tree. The angel granted him a wish to repay his generosity. Shuichiro said, "I need no wish, I can get what I want on my own." But they'd both soon learn that some wishes can't be fulfilled alone.

The main character of the manga, the "Zodiac P.I." of the title, is a 13-year-old girl named Lili Hoshizawa, who uses horoscopes and astrology to solve crimes, accompanied and assisted by her male childhood friend Hiromi after he returns from ten years spent in America. Lili uses the Star Ring to tell fortunes and, at times, to transform into the disguise of "Detective Spica", in which no one recognizes her (such transformations are a common staple of Magical Girl manga.) The ring was left to Lili by her mother, who used it previously to transform into Detective Spica; one of Lili's long-term goals is to discover what happened to her missing mother.

A girl named Ichigo Momomiya, and four other girls, Mint Aizawa, Lettuce Midorikawa, Pudding Fong, and Zakuro Fujiwara, have their DNA mysteriously combined with the DNA of endangered species. Gaining special abilities and a different appearance, they later find out that they have been chosen to protect Earth from a group of aliens (whose race is not named in Tokyo Mew Mew) who wish to 'reclaim it': Kish, Tart, Pie, and the mysterious Deep Blue, who have the power to control aliens which infect animals (infusors/Parapara), turning their hosts into monsters called Chimera Animals.

Yûhi, a relatively popular guy at his school, has his life interrupted by the ominous premonition of his beautiful sister-in-law, Suzumi. The story revolves around Hatsumi Narita, a passive 16-year old girl who lives in a company housing complex that is ruled by the tyrannical Mrs. Tachibana, the wife of the company's vice president. How a family behaves in the housing complex can affect an employee's status in the company. When her promiscuous younger sister Akane thinks she might be pregnant, poor Hatsumi gets talked into buying her a pregnancy test. Unfortunately, things don't go exactly as planned and Hatsumi is blackmailed by Ryoki Tachibana, the bratty, geeky teenage son of the powerful Tachibana family who bullied her as a kid, into being his slave.

Bleach follows the life of Ichigo Kurosaki, a 15-year-old high school student with the ability to see ghosts, and a shinigami (Soul Reaper or, literally, "death god") named Rukia Kuchiki, who crosses paths with him one day while searching for a hollow (an evil spirit). During the ensuing confrontation with the spirit, she is wounded and forced to transfer virtually all of her powers into Ichigo. Thus the adventures of Ichigo and Rukia begin. Together they search for hollows and perform soul burials on wayward souls, cleansing the spirits and sending them to Soul Society.

The early parts of the story focus mainly on the characters and their past, rather than the actual occupation of the shinigami. However, as events unfold, the story begins to delve deeper into the world of these gods of death on the "other side" called Soul Society.
